Because our business has almost always come from word-of-mouth, I have never had a business website—except those done for specific publishing or client projects. As publishing and marketing have changed so much over the past decade it became clear that their work processes were drawing closer together. Given the vast number of books now published every year, the bulk of publishing is marketing.
And, since we enjoy it all, it did not seem worth the effect to keep separate the variety of design, marketing and publishing project (including foreign rights sales) we were working on.
So, we put a name to it, Book Lab, and brought it all together with a few samples of the work Michael Manoogian and I have been doing together and individually and put up this site.
And, this journal to offer some news of our work and occasional observations on marketing, publishing and design.
Complete marketing starts, really, when a product is conceived and spans all the steps necessary to groom it up and take it to market in a way that achieves the maximum interest, acceptance and sales. Sounds like publishing, and vice vesa.
